DigiFrame enables access to personalized information at any time through our truly wireless e-paper display and our open widget platform.

Overview

There are so many tablets and displays around us, overwhelming us with information and advertisements, but there is no device which can deliver personalized information wherever and whenever we need it.

If you’ve ever tried to adopt a tablet on a wall to act as simple weather information display device, then you’ve likely run into several of these common problems: How do I get power to the device? Will the power cable look nice on my wall? What if I want to put it on a fridge door? Will light from device disturb me in the morning or evening? What software will I run on this screen? Does it actually display the information I want?

Only now we can solve these problems with a combination of new technologies:

  1. An e-paper screen which does not use any energy when displaying static text;
  2. High-capacity lithium batteries in a small, lightweight package;
  3. A versatile and open widget platform for information and content delivery.

Market

Due to high e-paper screen cost, the e-paper screen market is largely underserved. Only one other company, Visionnect (Slovakia) manufactures similar devices in small quantities and at a high price point, and they primarily serve the digital signage market.

We will aim for the consumer market. In this market, the only real competitors are iPad and other tablet-like devices. While such devices are relatively cheap and available, they lack convenience of installation – they require a power cord, do not have an easy-to-use information display platform, lack the aesthetics of a naturally-lit display, and require OS maintenance.
In short, it is too inconvenient for the average consumer to use tablet as an everyday information dashboard.

With stripped down features (only WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, no peripherals) we intend to keep our manufacturing cost low. We expect to make very little margin from hardware sales.
Our information widget platform is oriented towards 3rd party developers with a focus on productivity apps and smart home with IoT device integration. We expect to make a profit from advertising widgets.

Our longer-term goal is to capture the “smart screen” market with our software platform. The minimum requirement for our software is a web browser with an internet connection, which allows us to run on older / used tablets if the end user accepts the inconveniences that this type of device implies. As soon as we obtain 1MM users within our platform, the platform will become a valuable asset to reach those users for advertisers.

Traction

During our pre-launch campaigns we have collected 1,500 potential user leads for the device and platform. We have identified most promising targeting methods for users and developers in order to reach the maximum number of users with minimal marketing budget. Many respondents have expressed interest in acquiring such device for use as a digital Post It note and as an interface to their other smart IoT devices.

Business model

Our business model centers on our ecosystem of widget developers and content providers. This ecosystem could attract developers if there are at least 100K devices on the market, and we will build quality in-house widgets to seed adoption. Our content platform will generate revenue from the very beginning. It will not be subscription fee for the users but rather advertising revenue.

Primary market for monetization is the developers of productivity apps and services. Many productivity app developers will spend a portion of their marketing budget on our widget platform to be in “featured widgets” lists or appear as “sponsored” widgets in search lists if that will drive up installs and usage for their productivity apps, which subsequently drive-up their revenues from subscriptions or other monetization models they use. For the “widget store” model to be successful we will need and initial 100K users which is achievable with DigiFrame.

We are not stopping here. As soon as we get this widget platform up we will open it to other smart devices – tablets, smart TVs, even Amazon Echo Show. The minimum requirement for such devices is to be able to display a web page. So that opens up millions of users for our platform. Not to mention that we are also designing DigiFrame Mod and DigiFrame Dock for Motorola’s MotoZ-family moddable phones.

The Digiframe team has participated in Transform the Smartphone challenge competition organized by Motorola Mobility and came out as a winner.

The second hardware prototype EE and ME designs are ready to go into preparation for production stage. Motorola will commit to an initial order of 15,000 devices for $1.3MM USD.

DigiFrame Dock

Through a partnership deal with Vilnius Gediminas Technical University, we have developed a proof of concept for a second product around MotoZ-family phones: the DigiFrame Dock. It is a docking station for your phone together with a smart voice assistant.

Funding

Funding will be used to cover the cost of production-ready device development, manufacturing preparation, KickStarter campaign marketing activities, and other go-to-market activities. Our KickStarter campaign is planned in November 2017 to generate initial funding required to manufacture the first batch of devices.
